As expected, Roger Federer has been made top seed for Wimbledon 2010, with Roddick also rising a few places to 5th, and Hewitt leaping numerous ranking places to get 15th seeding, thus avoiding the likes of Federer in the first round. The womens rankings are as they are in the WTA rankings, with only player withdrawals affected the seedings, but the mens seedings are affected by points gained in grass tournaments over the last two years.
HOW THE SEEDS ARE WORKED OUT
Official ATP ranking points as at a week before Wimbledon where we start off, that's all points gained in all the tournaments you played in last year, be it clay, grass, hard, the surface of the moon, whatever. After this, the men are then given extra points as per the following formula:
- Add 100% points earned for all grass court tournaments in the past 12 months.
- Add 75% points earned for best grass court tournament in the 12 months before that.
So say for example that in the week before Wimbledon, I have 5000 ATP rankings points and I won Wimbledon and won Queens, so that's an extra 2000 points for Wimbledon last year, and then an extra 250 for winning Queens. So I now have 7250 'seeding' points.
We then add my Wimbledon and Queens points from the year before (2008), which being the legend I am, I won both in that year too. This time you only add 75% of my 2000 Wimbledon points and 250 queens points, which would be 1687.5 points. So you add those to my 7250 points, giving myself a total of 8937.5 seeding points.
