Wimbledon 2010:Rafael Nadal vs Andy Murray semifinal match today

HISTORY AND hope lie heavily on the shoulders of England's Andy Murray. The prolonged spell, the long wait for 74 years may be over in today's match when Murray faces world number 1, Rafael Nadal. Fourth seeded, Andy Murray knows whom he is playing against and how to play against him. The immediate advantage that Murray has is, he had beaten Nadal in a couple of Grand Slams that also included New York in 2008 and Melbourne Open. The favourite till now limited only to papers is undoubtedly, Rafael Nadal.

Strategically, Murray knows how to play against Nadal as well as tactically as both of them have faced each other before. He could have won last year's Grand Slam title had he not faced Andy Roddick. Keeping his hopes high, Murray said, “ It's obviously been a huge, huge wait for us, and it's still going on now. The crowd obviously would love to see a British player win Wimbledon”.

For the four players left in the tournament, this is their big chance as the hot property of tennis, Roger Federer made an early and unexpected exit from Wimbledon. Federer being the best, all the players knew that its better to leave him untouched. Now that he is out from the game, the same feelings go for Nadal.

However, Andy Murray's untimely exit from earlier Grand Slams have made him realize the importance of staying fit, mentally as well as physically. This showed when he defeated Nadal in the US Open to reach his first ever Grand Slam final. In this match as well, Murray can take some examples on how to gain confidence and perform by watching his last match against the Spaniard.

In another semifinal on Thursday Wimbledon champion Serena Williams defeated unseeded Petra Kvitova in straight sets to reach her third straight Wimbledon final and sixth overall.

Williams on her way to fourth Wimbledon title and 13th Grand Slam championship overcame challenge in the first set from the Czech player, then pulled away for a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory on Thursday. It's the 10th time in the last 11 years that at least one of the Williams sisters has advanced to the final. Venus and Serena have won eight titles.

"It definitely wasn't easy. I worked really hard," top seed Serena said. "I'm happy to still be here, it's such a blessing to still be in the tournament. " Williams will now face Russian 21st seed Vera Zvonareva in Saturday's final. Zvonareva said after the match, “I am very excited. I think I'm not realizing it at the moment. It was very tough out there. She's a very young player but a very, very tough opponent and she started so well. I am happy with the way I was able to hang in the match and able to turn it around.”

The 25-year-old Zvonareva's previous best showing in a Grand Slam was a semifinal appearance at the 2009 Australian Open. Serena Williams vs Petra Kvitova today in ladies singles semi-finals

TODAY'S MATCH between world number one Serena Williams and unseeded Czech Petra Kvitova might not seem like a clash of the titans but rather a situation, where who will outperform whom. Post her 6-2, 6-1 loss against Serena in the Australia Open early this January, the 20 year old has amassed the attention of the world number one in the past 10 days.

Ladies and gentlemen, here's presenting world number 62, Petra Kvitova who has killed three seeded players in the Wimbledon championship 2010 to clinch her first ever semi-final birth in a Grand Slam which also included defeating US Open runner up Caroline Wozniacki.

The result has not surprised Serena even one bit as she had seen Petra Kvitova gaining confidence as the tournament developed. Speaking about the advance that Petra has made so far, Serena was candid about the confession that, “ I actually thought she would get through in the early rounds. I'm not surprised that I'm playing her. She's really, really good. Early in the tournament, I saw her playing a couple of rounds and I was like, 'wow, she's doing really well'. She was just hitting the ball so clean.

Serena also said that after Petra defeated Caroline Wozniacki she had analysed that the former is a tough player, specially on grass.

Going by all these encouraging words, if, considering the odds Serena loses this game, then she probably might kick herself back home all the way up till Florida!
